Día de los Niños y Libros is a contemporary Mexican celebration of honoring the kids in the community, recently combined is activities to encourage a love of reading. Around here, "Día!" happens on the Monday closest to April 30th. This is one of our favorite occasions in the neighborhood!
The evening begins with a meal, followed by some cultural storytelling. The children then set off to become Young Authors and Illustrators, writing and binding their very own books! Older youth work on other projects, such as installing our neighborhood Free Little Library. At the end of the evening, all children and youth stop by the Sunnyside Bookstore to pick out several free books to take home and build up their personal libraries!
The date for 2020 is April 27th. Sign-up for volunteering will be posted in April. We collect new or nearly new books (Preschool - High School) in March and April. We accept books in Spanish for preschool children so that our Spanish-speaking parents can easily read to them. Books that aren't given given away during this time will be saved for the following year, as well as being used in our Freedom School classroom libraries during the summer.
Please consider buying books from our Amazon wish list! Many of them are books that are particularly popular, are requested by our neighborhood kids, or have good morals. We also look for books that have protagonists representing people of color to help encourage the diversity in our neighborhood. Books purchased from our Amazon wish list will be sent directly to us.
