Interfaith Educational Discussion w/ Rabbi Mark-Strauss and Kel Billings, MTh, and Rev. Russ May.

Join us for an educational gathering with Rabbi Mark Strauss-Cohn of Temple Emmanuel as we learn about Sukkot, when Jewish communities use shelters/Sukkoths to remember how G-d cared and provided for the People as they wandered in the wilderness without home or food for forty years. Kel Billings will share on the role of Sukkot in the life of the church. Rev Russ May will discuss how the Festival of Shelters is a way to remember others displaced. Come as you are. This event is free and open to the public.

What Else Can We the Community Do? A Better Response:

An important Compassionate Community discussion on how we can work together (law enforcement, health professionals, outreach specialists, congregations) to help people on the streets get the help they need without resorting to criminalizing homelessness. This comes on the heels of HUD saying they will reward communities who decriminalize homelessness in their city, and the US DOJ’s recent legal opinion on homelessness. Come as you are. This event is free and open to the public.

Night of Compassion: including cookout, music, and a community-wide campout starting around 5:30pm at Second St Parking lot next to First Presbyterian Church.

You are invited to a community event meant to convey our care for and solidarity with those who are still homeless in our city today. There will be a cookout, live music, guest speakers, and a community message board. Participate in a one-minute eye-to-eye exercise to see where the human connection has gone. We also hope you will spend the night downtown with us – bring your own tent or box, plus something to soften your bed!! Your entire family is invited to campout (minors must sleep in parent/guardian’s tent)!
